The Muses Nail Art From Disney Hercules

Γειά σας κορίτσια! (Hello girls!) Today I am starting a series that is very close to my heart -- My Hercules Nail Art series! 

I want to preface this by saying how beautiful Greek culture is, and what role it has played in my life! I first fell in love this the ancient city of Athens when I was in the 5th grade and went there on a trip with other 5th graders. However, my love for Greece, mythology, and the ancient city blossomed when I lived in Παγκράτι (Pangrati) a neighborhood in Central Athens.

That being said, I have studied the Greek language, and so much of it's history and I want to share some of that with you all! What better way than to use a movie that most of you (hopefully) have already seen and love! 

**Note: The Disney Hercules movie gets a lot of Greek mythology wrong -- but that is what I am using this series to explain! Now onto the nail art.

Thalia is the muse of comedy (thumb)

Clio (Kleio) is the muse of history (pointer)

Calliope (Kalliope) is the muse of epic poetry (middle)

Melpomene is the muse of tragedy (ring)

Terpsichore is the muse of dance (pinky) 

• Terpsichore is the only muse that ever actually interacted with Hercules, teaching him how to dance. 

So who were the muses?

In Hercules, we see five muses, but in Greek Mythology there are actually nine. The muses are deities, or minor goddesses, that personify the arts -- giving artists, philosophers and others inspiration to create. If you’ve read The Odyssey or The Iliad, you’ve already met some of the muses when Homer asks them to help him tell these stories.

It is said in Greek Mythology that Zeus brought the Muses to life to celebrate the victory of the Olympians over the Titans. These goddesses are often portrayed as ethereal, beautiful women – and the same can be said about Disney’s portrayal of them.
